The Federal Government has granted provisional approval for the establishment of the National Institute of Construction Technology (NICT) in Uromi, Edo State.
This was disclosed by the Vice President, Namadi Sambo during the celebration of the Holy Mass of Thanksgiving to mark the 80th birthday anniversary of elder statesman, Anthony Akhakon Anenih at St. Anthony’s Catholic Cathedral in his home town, Uromi, Edo State, on Saturday.
According to the Vice President, “President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan granted this provisional approval as a mark of appreciation of the contributions of a great Nigerian and patriot, Tony Anenih, who believes in the sovereignty, unity and indivisibility of this nation, as he puts Nigeria first in all he does.”

personified hard work, resilience, dedication and his life is a demonstration of commitment to the service of humanity.”
Speaking further, Sambo said that, “From a humble beginning, Tony Anenih rose to the pinnacle of his professional calling by dint of hard work and perseverance, retiring as a Commissioner of Police after serving in various police formations and leaving behind indelible records of exemplary service.”
The Vice President added that “with Tony Anenih’s entry into partisan politics as chairman of the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in the then old Bendel State, he carved out a niche for himself in the political lexicon of Nigeria, earning him the title of ‘Mr. Fix it.
“Tony Anenih’s belief in democracy and democratic governance and his quest for the entrenchment of Democracy and the Rule-of-Law is unquenchable.”
Anenih was appointed the Minister of Works and Housing in 1999. He was a member of the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) until early April 2002, when he transferred to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where he became Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party.
Earlier in the ceremony, Anenih thanked God for enabling him to attain the age of 80. He expressed his gratitude to the Federal Government for the proposed establishment of the NICT in Uromi and particularly appreciated the presence of Vice President Namadi Sambo at the event.
Highlights of the event included the homily given by Archbishop Bogobiri of Kafanchan Catholic Archdiocese, where he cautioned all Nigerians to drop the spears and sheath the swords, turning the arrows into ploughs and shields to enable the nation forge ahead. “Our responsibility as a people” he continued “is to keep supporting and praying for the government in power and not to castigate or destroy them.”
The Onojie of Uromi, HRH Anselem Eidenojie received the Vice President, who was in his palace on a courtesy visit. He thanked the government for the developmental strides enjoyed in Uromi and expressed delight for the transformation agenda, which he said is paying off in Uromi. He said that Uromi remains committed to the success of this administration and prayed God to give to the President and the Vice President the courage to continue to govern the nation. He pledged to give them the necessary support to ensure their success in the forthcoming polls if they so desire to run.
The Chief of Staff to the President, Mike Oghiadomhe; Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen; the Wakilin Adamawa and member PDP BoT, Hasssan Adamu; Justice Mariam and Dame Patricia Anenih, serving and former senators of the National and State Assemblies, Gabriel Igbinedion, royal fathers and religious leaders were amongst the dignitaries, alongside Anenih’s wives, present at the event.
