The Force headquarters has ordered an investigation into the violent altercation between some policemen and Federal Road Safety Corps personnel in which a road safety officer, Mangshin Mundi was shot last week in Abuja.
Our correspondent gathered that two FRSC personnel who were involved in the brawl had written statements at the State Criminal Investigation Department and explained the circumstances that led to the shooting of the road safety officer
The FCT Sector Command of the FRSC, Kayode Fanola who confirmed the development in an
interview on Friday, said that he expected the police authorities to punish the errant policemen for shooting a corps personnel and injuring another one during the President’s movement.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Femi Ogunbayode also confirmed that the incident was being investigated, stressing that any indicted officer would be punished.
“The SCID has commenced investigation into the fight between some policemen and men of the FRSC, and those involved will be punished if found culpable, at the end of investigation,”he said.
Meanwhile, Fanola has charged drivers to obey all traffic regulations along the Kubwa-Zuba axis and Abuja-Gwagwalada-Lokoja road to avoid traffic gridlock on account of the ongoing rehabilitation of the road.
He said that the corps had within four days charged 164 drivers before its mobile court for various traffic offences, 160 of whom were convicted and fined.
He added that two drivers were remanded in prison custody because they refused to stop, adding that one hit a corps officer and the second driver hit the fence of a court while trying to escape being booked.
Fanola said,”We have deployed over one thousand road marshalls within the FCT and between Zuba and Abaji, there are four ambulance points as well as tow trucks. Members of the public are requested to call our toll-free line, 122 in case of any emergency.”
Also speaking, the Corps Marshall, Osita Chidoka said the agency had achieved a reduction in road crashes and fatalities in the last five days of the 2013 yuletide special patrol, tagged “Operation Zero Tolerance” which was flagged off on December 19, 2013 and will end on 12 January 2014.
Speaking at Obosi near Onitsha, Anambra State during the nationwide exercise, he stated that the Corps’ renewed efforts has so far yielded positive results as the road crash figures for this year has witnessed a slight reduction when compared to 2012 special patrol fall-out, within the same period of 19-23 December.
He said, “A study of traffic flow along various routes of the highways indicate seamless traffic flow which can be largely attributed to the massive deployment of 4 heavy duty tow trucks, 37 patrol trucks, 12 ambulances and 102 patrol motor bikes recently provided by the World bank to enhance our patrol and rescue services during this period”.
